When released in October 1993, the Lexmark 4037 SE printer series was among the most affordable monochrome laser printers available to consumers. The Lexmark 4037 SE provided print speed and processing that was competitive with other imaging systems, in addition to workgroup connectivity via a parallel connection.
The same imaging system was sold under the IBM brand. The same engine was used in the Lexmark 4047 and ValuWriter 300, 400 and 600, with full cartridge compatibility among all the different models.
